How we calculate your speed

Most speed calculators hand you a single magic number with no math behind it. We show every step so you can trust the result — and tweak the inputs if you disagree. Here is the exact methodology.

Add up each activity

Multiply the Mbps each activity needs by how many run at once. Two 4K streams = 50 Mbps before anything else.

Add device overhead

Every idle phone, TV and smart bulb adds background traffic. We budget 1 Mbps per connected device on top of your activities.

Apply safety headroom

Real traffic is bursty. We multiply the raw total by ~1.29× (scaled up for busier households) so peak hours don't stutter.

Round to a plan tier

ISPs sell set tiers (100, 300, 500, 1000…). We round up to the next real tier so the recommendation maps to something you can actually buy.

Internet speed FAQs

What internet speed do I need?

It depends on how many people and devices share your connection and what they do at the same time. Most households are comfortable on 100-300 Mbps. Add up the Mbps each simultaneous activity needs, then add 25-50% headroom for peak hours. The calculator above does this for you.

How much Mbps do I need for 4K streaming?

Plan on about 25 Mbps per 4K (ultra-HD) stream. Two simultaneous 4K streams need roughly 50 Mbps before headroom, so a 100-300 Mbps plan keeps things smooth even when others are online.

Is 100 Mbps fast enough?

For one to three people doing a mix of HD streaming, browsing and video calls, yes. If you regularly run multiple 4K streams, cloud gaming or large downloads at once, 300 Mbps or more is safer.

Do I need gigabit (1000 Mbps) internet?

Most homes do not. Gigabit makes sense for large households with many concurrent 4K streams and gamers, homes that upload big files or livestream, and houses packed with smart devices. Otherwise you will likely pay for speed you never use.

What is a good upload speed?

Video calls, cloud backups and content creation rely on upload. Cable plans often give only 10-35 Mbps up, while fiber is usually symmetric (upload equals download). If you work from home on camera or create content, favor fiber.

How many Mbps does each device need?

Idle devices use very little, but each one adds a little background traffic for updates and keep-alives. Budget roughly 1 Mbps per connected device on top of your active usage, and focus your planning on the activities running at the same time.

What is a good ping (latency) for gaming?

Under 20ms is excellent, 20-50ms is good for almost everything, 50-100ms is fair and workable for MMOs and casual play, and above 100ms will hurt competitive games. For fast FPS titles like Valorant or CS2, aim for under 50ms. Once you have enough bandwidth, ping matters more than raw speed for gaming.

How much upload speed do I need?

Add up what uploads at the same time: a video call needs 3-5 Mbps up, 1080p live streaming 6-10 Mbps, cloud backups 5-20 Mbps, and large work uploads 10-50 Mbps. Most cable plans cap upload at 10-35 Mbps; if you regularly livestream or upload big files, look at symmetric fiber where upload equals download.
