Each entry is the per-stream download (or upload, where noted) speed needed for the activity to run reliably. We cross-reference three source classes and round to the higher value when sources disagree:
- FCC Broadband benchmarks — the 25/3 Mbps baseline and updated fixed-broadband reporting.
- Ookla Speedtest Global Index — real-world median performance by country and US state.
- ISP and platform published requirements — Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, GeForce NOW and Xbox Cloud published speed guidance.

How much internet speed do I need for Netflix 4K?
Netflix recommends 15 Mbps as the minimum and 25 Mbps per stream for a reliably smooth 4K (Ultra HD) experience. Two simultaneous 4K streams need about 50 Mbps before headroom, so a 100-300 Mbps plan keeps things smooth for a typical household.
Is 100 Mbps enough for a family?
For a family of 2-3 doing a mix of HD streaming, browsing, video calls and light gaming, 100 Mbps is usually enough. If the household regularly runs multiple 4K streams, cloud gaming or large downloads at the same time, plan on 300 Mbps or more.
What speed do I need for gaming?
For online gaming, latency (ping) matters more than raw speed — aim for under 50 ms. Bandwidth-wise, most games need only 3-10 Mbps down. Cloud gaming (GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud) is the exception and needs 10-35 Mbps, or 50+ Mbps for 4K/120fps. A family of four typically needs 200-400 Mbps. That covers several HD streams plus one or two 4K streams, video calls, gaming and homework at the same time. If two people game or work from home concurrently, lean toward 400-800 Mbps.
How much internet speed do I need for working from home?
A solo remote worker is comfortable on 25-50 Mbps. If you add VPN overhead, frequent cloud backups and large file uploads, 50-100 Mbps is safer. Households where two people video-call and upload at the same time should plan for 100+ Mbps, ideally with symmetric fiber upload.
What internet speed do I need for a smart home?
A typical smart home (cameras, doorbells, speakers, thermostat, smart TVs) adds 10-25 Mbps of background traffic on top of your active use. Each cloud security camera uses 2-5 Mbps continuously. A smart home with several cameras and 4K TVs should plan for at least 300-500 Mbps.
Is gigabit internet worth it?
For most homes, no — 300-500 Mbps handles a busy family. Gigabit (1000 Mbps) makes sense for large households running many concurrent 4K streams, multiple gamers, content creators who upload big files, and homes packed with smart devices and cameras.
