The rule that actually matters: count active use, not devices
A household with 40 connected devices is not necessarily a heavy household — 30 of them could be idle smart bulbs and sensors sipping under 1 Mbps each. The number that decides your plan size is the peak simultaneous active load: the 4K streams, video calls and game downloads all happening in the same minute. Budget for that peak, then add roughly 30% headroom, and you have your target speed.

The real constraint is not the device count but what those devices are doing simultaneously — ten idle phones barely register, while two 4K streams and a game download will saturate a 50 Mbps link.
Is 50 Mbps enough for a family of four?
Yes for most families, with one caveat. 50 Mbps comfortably carries two 4K streams (30-50 Mbps) plus browsing and a video call when those activities are not all peaking at the same instant. It gets tight when a teenager downloads a 100 GB game update at the same time as someone is on a work video call and someone else is streaming 4K. If your household regularly stacks a big download against live calls, step up to 100 Mbps.
How many devices can run on 100 Mbps?
Roughly 25-40 connected devices for a busy family, assuming the usual mix of streaming, browsing, video calls and gaming. The math: a 100 Mbps plan sustains about 80 Mbps of real-world throughput after overhead. That is enough for three 4K streams (60-75 Mbps) plus a handful of browsing and call sessions, with smart-home devices adding only a small background load. Where 100 Mbps breaks down is concurrent large downloads — a single game update can hog half the link.
Do smart-home devices use a lot of bandwidth?
Individually, no — a smart bulb, door sensor or thermostat uses under 1 Mbps and mostly sits idle. The catch is volume: a modern smart home with 20-40 connected devices adds a steady background load of 5-15 Mbps plus a lot of tiny Wi-Fi management frames that compete for airtime. Cameras are the exception: a single 2K security camera streaming to the cloud can use 2-4 Mbps continuously, and four of them will eat 10-15 Mbps of your upload — a real problem on an asymmetric NBN 50/20 plan.
Do I need gigabit internet for a big household?
Only if your household genuinely stacks heavy use. Why does my fast plan still feel slow with lots of devices?
Usually Wi-Fi, not the internet connection. A single 5 GHz Wi-Fi band shared across 25 devices has limited airtime; when several of them burst at once, packets queue and latency spikes — which feels exactly like a slow connection even though speed tests still report full speed.
